Referencing heavy metal album art, old school skate graphics and a touch of comic-gore, Bad Things is the brainchild of Raglan trio Vinnie Woolston, partner Mala Brajkovic and Maki Nishiyama – a new clothing label with a horrorful spin on streetwear.
The launch of Bad Things hails a return to the fashion world for Mala, who worked as Karen Walker’s design assistant before launching her eponymously-titled label and store on Auckland’s Vulcan Lane.
While she has been freelancing on and off for some big-name labels over the years, many fans mourned her departure when she closed up shop in 2008 to be a full-time mother to her first daughter Mickey.
Eight years later, with two more daughters added to the gang, the time was right for her to start something new.
“I wanted to start a business that we could operate from Raglan and work around the kids and family life. All three of us have a really similar aesthetic and personal style and we all bring different skills to the table,” says Mala.
Mala’s partner Vinnie also has quite a following through his work as a model having shot campaigns for Wrangler, and Replay and walking runways for high fashion labels such as Thierry Mugler. More recently he has been the face of YSL's La Nuit de l'Homme.
Keeping the collection at a streetwear level and focusing mainly on basics like tees, tanks, crews, hoodies as well as some select jewellery pieces, they hope to branch out into other styles as the business develops.
